On a typical summer day in South East Queensland, the air inside an uninsulated roof space can get far hotter than the air outside. That heat does not stay up there. It travels down through the plasterboard and keeps radiating into rooms long after sunset, which is why so many Brisbane bedrooms feel stuffy at 10pm. A continuous layer of quality ceiling insulation is the most effective way to stop it.

Why ceiling insulation matters in Brisbane's subtropical climate

Brisbane falls within National Construction Code climate zone 2, defined by hot, humid summers and mild winters. In colder cities, insulation is mostly about keeping heat in. Here, the bigger job is keeping heat out, particularly heat flowing downward from the roof.

Heat gain through the roof

The roof is the largest surface of your home exposed to the sun. Dark tiles and metal roofs absorb a lot of energy, and in summer the sun is high overhead for most of the day. Without enough insulation, the ceiling becomes a giant heater sitting above every room.

Humidity and comfort

Humid air makes high temperatures feel worse, and air conditioners in Brisbane work hard to remove both heat and moisture. Reducing heat gain through the ceiling means the system reaches a comfortable temperature sooner and cycles less.

Winter mornings still count

Brisbane winters are mild but mornings can be crisp, especially in western suburbs and around Ipswich, and noticeably colder on the Toowoomba Range. The same ceiling batts that keep summer heat out also help hold warmth in on those mornings.

Knauf Earthwool® ceiling batts

Insulation Extract supplies and installs Knauf Earthwool® batts. They are a glasswool product made with up to 80% recycled glass and bound with ECOSE® Technology, a bio-based binder with no added formaldehyde. They are soft to handle, far less itchy than the glasswool many people remember, and come in a range of R-values.

  • Strong thermal performance for the thickness, measured by R-value
  • Non-combustible glasswool
  • Batts that stay in shape and do not slump like some older materials
  • Backed by a 50-year manufacturer warranty

Choosing the right R-value for a Brisbane home

R-value measures how well a material resists heat flow. The higher the number, the better the insulation performs. For an existing Brisbane home, the right choice depends on the space available between your joists and roof, how much existing insulation is there, whether your roof has reflective sarking, and your budget.

Higher R-values are especially worthwhile above rooms that cop the afternoon sun, such as west-facing bedrooms, and in homes with dark roofs. During the free assessment we measure the roof space and recommend an R-value that suits the house rather than a one-size-fits-all product.

Ceiling insulation for Queenslanders, brick homes and new estates

Queenslanders and older timber homes

Character homes in suburbs such as Paddington, Red Hill, Ashgrove and Annerley often have steep pitched roofs with plenty of room to work, but many were never insulated or still have thin, decades-old batts. Some have lowered or altered ceilings from past renovations, which we check for access and safe walking paths before quoting.

1970s and 1980s brick and tile homes

Low-set brick homes across the northside and southside frequently have low-pitched roofs, tight edges near the eaves and old insulation that has compacted over time. Where batts cannot be placed neatly into tight edges, blow-in insulation can complete the coverage.

Newer homes in growth areas

Homes in places such as North Lakes, Springfield and Coomera usually have insulation from new, but it may be the minimum installed at the time of construction, or disturbed by electricians, solar installers and air-conditioning technicians. Topping up or replacing it can make a noticeable difference.

Old insulation, storms and pests

Before installing new batts, we look closely at what is already in the roof. In Brisbane, common problems include:

  • Batts soaked by storm or hail damage leaks, which slump and lose performance
  • Insulation fouled by possums, rats or birds, which can create odours and hygiene problems
  • Thin, compacted batts that have lost most of their thickness over the years
  • Old loose-fill cellulose that has settled and gaps around downlights and manholes

Where the existing insulation is no longer doing its job, we recommend removing it first with our 25HP negative-pressure vacuum, which transfers it straight into sealed truck hoppers. Laying new batts over damaged or contaminated insulation is rarely a good idea.

If your home was built before 1990, any old insulation and nearby materials should be checked before removal. If something suspicious turns up, we stop and recommend testing by a licensed professional.

How we install ceiling insulation

Free on-site assessment

A specialist inspects your roof space, checks existing insulation, notes downlights, exhaust fans and other services, and recommends products and R-values.

Preparation and safety

We protect access points, plan safe paths across the joists and set the clearances needed around downlights, flues and electrical equipment.

Installation

Batts are fitted snugly between and over joists with no gaps, because even small gaps reduce overall performance. Clearances are kept around heat-producing fittings.

Quality check and handover

We check coverage across the entire ceiling, tidy up the access point and walk you through the result, along with the warranty details.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on your roof space, existing insulation, roof colour and whether you have reflective sarking. Higher R-values give better resistance to heat flow, and we recommend a specific option for your home during the free on-site assessment.
