Earthwool® ceiling batts for Sydney homes

Ceiling Insulation Sydney

Ceiling insulation in Sydney is the single most useful upgrade for most existing homes: it slows summer heat coming down from a hot roof and stops winter warmth escaping through the ceiling. Insulation Extract supplies and installs Knauf Earthwool® batts across Greater Sydney from our Prestons depot.

Why ceiling insulation matters in the Sydney climate

Sydney is really two climates sharing one city. Under the National Construction Code, most of coastal and central Sydney sits in climate zone 5, a warm temperate zone, while much of western Sydney falls into zone 6, which is mild temperate with cooler winters. A home in Bondi or Cronulla and a home in Penrith or Campbelltown can need quite different things from their ceiling.

Near the coast, sea breezes take the edge off summer afternoons, but humidity stays high and roof spaces still get very hot under dark tiles and metal sheeting. Further west, the Cumberland Plain regularly sees days well above 40°C, and the same suburbs record frosty winter mornings. In both cases the roof space is where most of the heat is won or lost, which is why ceiling insulation gives such a good return in Sydney homes.

Coastal and eastern Sydney

In the Eastern Suburbs, Inner West, Northern Beaches and Sutherland Shire, the main job of ceiling insulation is keeping summer heat out of upstairs bedrooms and living areas. Moist, salty air also means older insulation can pick up damp and dust over the years, so checking its condition is part of every assessment.

Western and south western Sydney

In Blacktown, Penrith, Liverpool, Campbelltown and the Hills District, homes have to cope with both extremes. Colder climates benefit from higher ceiling R-values, so for zone 6 homes we usually talk through the upper end of the Earthwool range to help with long winter nights as well as heatwave afternoons.

Sydney homes we insulate

Most of our ceiling work in Sydney is retrofit work on houses that are already lived in. The city's housing stock is varied, and each type has its own quirks in the roof space:

  • Brick veneer homes from the post-war decades onwards, common right across Western Sydney, the Hills and the Shire, usually with a pitched tiled roof and reasonable access.
  • Federation and interwar homes in suburbs such as Haberfield, Ashfield, Strathfield and the Lower North Shore, often with high ceilings, decorative plaster and roof spaces that need careful foot placement.
  • Terrace houses in Paddington, Surry Hills, Newtown, Glebe and Balmain, where roof spaces are narrow, low and often split by party walls.
  • Fibro and weatherboard cottages, particularly in older parts of the south west, the Central Coast and the Illawarra.
  • Project homes from the 1990s and 2000s where the original batts have thinned, shifted or been disturbed by trades.

What a ceiling insulation install involves

Every job starts with a free on-site assessment in metro and outer metro areas. We look at roof access, the existing insulation, downlights, exhaust fans and anything stored in the roof space, then provide a written scope before any work is booked.

  • Assessment of the roof space and any existing insulation
  • Removal of old material first where it has settled, been disturbed or no longer covers evenly
  • Clearances kept around downlights, flues and other heat sources
  • Earthwool batts laid edge to edge between ceiling joists, with no gaps or compression
  • A clean finish, with offcuts and packaging taken away

Downlights, exhaust fans and solar

Many Sydney homes have had halogen downlights, bathroom exhaust fans and rooftop solar added over the years. Older downlights run hot and need clearance from insulation, while newer sealed LED fittings may allow batts to be laid closer. We check the fittings in your ceiling and keep the right gaps so the new layer is safe and still covers as much of the ceiling as possible.

Most single-storey homes can be insulated in a day. Two-storey homes, terraces with several small roof sections and jobs that include removal can take longer, and we confirm timing in the written scope.

If your home was built before 1990 and still has its original loose-fill or fluffy material in the roof, we check what it is before anything is disturbed. NSW has a history of loose-fill asbestos insulation, and we do not work on a ceiling that may contain it.

Knauf Earthwool® ceiling batts

We supply and install Knauf Earthwool® batts in Sydney. They are made with up to 80% recycled glass and ECOSE® Technology, a bio-based binder with no added formaldehyde, so they are soft to handle and do not have the itch many people remember from older glasswool.

Earthwool comes in a range of R-values, so the thickness can be matched to your roof space, climate zone and budget. The R-value measures thermal resistance: the higher the number, the more slowly heat moves through the ceiling. Earthwool batts carry a 50-year manufacturer warranty.

If you are renovating and your plans carry a BASIX certificate, it may set the ceiling insulation required. We can install to the R-value your certificate or builder specifies.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on your climate zone, roof and budget. Coastal and central Sydney is mostly NCC climate zone 5, while much of western Sydney is zone 6, where cooler winters make a higher R-value worthwhile. We recommend a rating from the Earthwool range after seeing your roof space.
