Insulation Extract removes tired ceiling insulation and installs a new thermal layer in existing homes across Geraldton and the wider Mid West of Western Australia.

Geraldton sits on a bright, windy stretch of the Indian Ocean coast. Summers run hot and dry, the sun loads the roof for long hours, and a strong afternoon sea breeze can cool the street while the roof space is still holding heat. Winters are milder than the southern wheatbelt, but clear nights still let warmth escape through an uninsulated ceiling.

A retrofit is for houses that are already built. We take out insulation that has settled, been disturbed or no longer covers the ceiling evenly, then install new Earthwool batts suited to Western Australian conditions.

Why existing Mid West homes often need removal first

Old batts and loose-fill can sag, shift or leave gaps around downlights, manholes and the edges of the roof space. Dust, pest activity and moisture from a coastal site can also reduce how well that layer performs. Adding new material on top of a damaged layer can leave those gaps in place.

Removal first gives a clear roof space so the new insulation can sit flat, edge to edge, at the R-value specified for the job.

What a Geraldton retrofit involves

Work is scoped after we understand access, the existing material and the ceiling layout. A typical removal and install includes:

  • An assessment of the existing ceiling insulation and roof-space access
  • Safe removal of old batts or blow-in material
  • Clearing and preparation of the roof space
  • Installation of new Earthwool ceiling batts
  • A written scope before work starts and a clean finish on the day

Earthwool ceiling insulation

Insulation Extract supply and install Earthwool® insulation batts. Earthwool® is available in a selection of R-values so builders, designers, installers and homeowners can choose the thermal performance that fits the project.

In Western Australia we recommend existing homes have R 3.5 to R 5.0 batts retrofitted to the ceiling. New-build work is typically specified in the R 3.0 to R 5.0 range.

Earthwool® ceiling batts are made using up to 80% recycled glass and with ECOSE® Technology, a bio-based binder that contains no added formaldehyde. They are soft to handle and install.

How insulation helps in a Geraldton climate

Ceiling insulation is a thermal barrier. It slows heat moving down into living rooms through a hot roof in summer, and slows heat leaving through the ceiling on cooler Mid West nights. Without a continuous layer, rooms rely more on air conditioning and heating to stay comfortable.

Insulation is measured by R-value — thermal resistance. The higher the R-value, the greater the resistance to heat flow. Think of it as the difference between a t-shirt and a thick woollen jumper.

The right R-value, a continuous layer and careful installation matter more than the name on the pack. Gaps, compression and leftover damaged material reduce performance.

Materials used in a retrofit

Most Geraldton ceiling retrofits use bulk insulation — batts or, where the roof space suits it, blow-in. The type of material can affect how the roof space is prepared and how the finished layer sits around obstacles.

  • Batt insulation: Glasswool batts such as Earthwool® are cut and fitted between joists for a defined R-value and even coverage.
  • Loose-fill or blow-in: Useful in irregular or obstructed roof spaces where a continuous loose layer is a better fit than cut batts.
  • Cavity wall insulation: For existing double-brick homes, insulation can be pumped into wall cavities rather than opened from inside the rooms.
  • Reflective foil and spray foam: Foil is usually a new-build or full roof-replacement detail. Spray foam is a different product path and is scoped separately.

A site assessment is the place to decide which of those options suits the house. Improperly installed insulation will not give the thermal resistance printed on the pack.
