Why Melbourne homes need old insulation removed
Many Melbourne roof spaces hold insulation that was installed decades ago and has not been touched since. Over time it settles, flattens and loses much of its ability to slow heat flow. Through a long Melbourne winter, that means warm air escaping through the ceiling night after night.
Removing the old material is often the first step to fixing a cold house. Laying new batts on top of a degraded layer hides the problem instead of solving it, traps old dust and odours, and makes it harder to get a clean, even result.
Common reasons for removal
- Insulation that has compressed or thinned out over the years
- Patchy coverage after electricians, plumbers or solar installers have moved batts aside
- Water damage from leaking roofs, burst pipes or storm damage
- Contamination from possums, rats and mice, including droppings, urine and nesting material
- Odours coming through ceiling vents and light fittings
- Renovations or ceiling replacements that need a clear roof space

Possums, rodents and Melbourne roof spaces
Brushtail and ringtail possums are a familiar sight in Melbourne's leafy suburbs, and an older roof with a gap at the eaves is an easy place for them to move in. Rats and mice also seek out warm roof spaces as the weather cools. Their droppings and urine soak into insulation, cause lingering smells and can affect indoor air quality.
Possums are protected wildlife in Victoria, so they should be humanely removed and the entry points sealed by a licensed wildlife controller or possum catcher before we clean up. Once the animals are out, we remove the soiled insulation and nesting material and leave the roof space ready for fresh batts.

What types of insulation we remove
Melbourne homes contain a mix of insulation types depending on when they were built and renovated. We regularly remove:
- Old glasswool and rockwool batts
- Loose-fill cellulose and other blown-in materials
- Polyester batts and rolls
- Polystyrene beads and offcuts
- Torn or deteriorated foil sarking and reflective blankets in the ceiling space
- General dust, builders' rubble and debris
A note on older homes and asbestos
If your home was built before 1990, the old insulation and other materials in the roof space should be checked before removal. We assess what is there during our site visit. If anything suspicious is found, work does not go ahead until it has been tested and dealt with in line with Victorian requirements.

How our insulation removal works
Free on-site assessment
We inspect the roof space, identify the insulation type and condition, look for signs of pests or water damage and check access. You get a clear written quote, with no obligation.
Setting up
Our truck parks outside and the vacuum hose runs to the manhole or an access point. Floors and furnishings near the access are protected.
Vacuum extraction
The 25HP negative-pressure system draws old insulation and dust through the hose directly into sealed truck hoppers. Because the system is under negative pressure, material is pulled away from your living spaces rather than pushed into them.
Disposal and final clean
The waste is taken away for disposal, and we do a final check of the roof space. Settled dust is disturbed during any ceiling clean, so a small amount may find its way out through exhaust fans or air conditioning vents; we will let you know what to expect beforehand.
Preparing for removal day
There is very little you need to do before we arrive. To help the day run smoothly:
- Clear a path to the manhole and move any furniture directly underneath it
- Let us know about any downlights, ducting, solar cabling or roof leaks you are aware of
- Close doors to rooms near the work area and switch off ducted heating or air conditioning while we work
- Keep pets inside or away from the driveway, where our truck and hose will be set up
- Make sure possums have already been relocated and their entry points sealed
Our crew handles everything else, from setting up and protecting floors to packing up and taking the waste away.

Removal and new insulation in one visit
Most Melbourne customers follow removal straight away with new Knauf Earthwool® ceiling batts. Earthwool uses ECOSE® Technology, a bio-based binder with no added formaldehyde, is made with up to 80% recycled glass and carries a 50-year manufacturer warranty. With Melbourne in climate zone 6, we usually recommend a higher ceiling R-value than you would choose in a warmer city, matched to the space available in your roof.
Insulation removal across Greater Melbourne, Geelong and the Peninsula
Our crews operate from the Dandenong South and Campbellfield hubs and cover:
- Inner Melbourne and the inner city
- The northern suburbs, including Preston, Brunswick and Whittlesea
