A roof space is rarely as clean as people imagine. Decades of fine dust, leaf litter blown in under the tiles, construction offcuts, old insulation and the remains of pests all collect on top of your ceiling. In a hot, humid city like Brisbane, that mix can produce odours, encourage mould and drop fine particles through gaps around downlights, vents and cornices.

What is a ceiling vacuum?

A ceiling vacuum is a full clean of the roof cavity using industrial extraction equipment. Rather than just pulling up batts, it removes the loose material that sits between and over the joists.

  • Old loose-fill insulation such as cellulose and settled "fluff"
  • Fine dust and soot that has built up over many years
  • Leaf litter, dirt and debris blown in during storms and windy weather
  • Possum, rat, mouse and bird droppings and nesting material
  • Builders' rubbish, offcuts and debris from past renovations

The result is a clean, even surface on top of the ceiling, which is the ideal starting point for new insulation.

Why Brisbane roof spaces get so dirty

Wildlife in leafy suburbs

Brisbane's tree-lined suburbs, from The Gap and Kenmore to Holland Park and Bulimba, are possum territory. Brushtail possums in particular love a warm, dry roof space. Rats and mice also find their way in through gaps at the eaves and roof edges. Over time, their droppings and urine soak into old insulation and create persistent smells.

Storms, wind and leaf litter

Summer storms drive wind and rain into roof spaces, carrying leaves, dirt and dust in through tile gaps and vents. Older homes with unsarked tile roofs are especially prone to building up layers of grime.

Heat and humidity

The combination of high roof-space temperatures and humid air speeds up the breakdown of older materials. Damp spots from storm leaks can allow mould to grow on dust and organic debris.

Years of add-ons

Many SEQ homes have had insulation, wiring, solar cabling and air-conditioning ducts added at different times. Each job leaves something behind, and old insulation is often pushed aside rather than replaced.

Benefits of vacuuming your ceiling

  • A healthier home

removing dust, droppings and decaying material reduces what can filter down into living areas, which many people with allergies or asthma appreciate.

  • Fewer odours

stale, musty and animal smells from the roof are often eliminated once contaminated material is gone.

  • Better insulation performance

new batts sit flat and continuous on a clean surface, with no lumps or voids underneath.

  • Reduced fire load

clearing combustible debris and old material away from wiring and light fittings is good housekeeping in any roof.

  • A clear view of the roof space

once it is clean, it is much easier to spot roof leaks, damaged timbers or entry points for pests.

How our ceiling vacuum service works

Assessment

We start with a free on-site assessment. Our specialist checks the type and depth of material in the roof, signs of pests, moisture, wiring hazards and how best to access the space.

Safety first

In homes built before 1990, old insulation and roof-space materials should be checked before any work begins. If we see anything that could contain asbestos, we stop and recommend testing by a licensed professional. We also identify electrical hazards and keep clear of damaged wiring.

Extraction

Hoses run from our truck into the roof space. The 25HP vacuum draws material directly into sealed hoppers on the truck, so nothing is carried through your home and there is no interior dust when the job is set up correctly.

Clean finish

We work across the whole ceiling, including along the eaves and around joists, as far as access allows, then check the cavity is clear.

New insulation

Most customers have new Knauf Earthwool® ceiling batts installed straight after the vacuum. Earthwool® is made with up to 80% recycled glass using ECOSE® Technology, a bio-based binder with no added formaldehyde, and is backed by a 50-year manufacturer warranty.

Getting your home ready for a ceiling vacuum

There is not much you need to do, but a little preparation helps the day run smoothly:

  • Make space for our truck to park as close to the house as practical, since the hoses run from the truck to the roof
  • Clear the area under the manhole so our team can set up access safely
  • Keep pets inside or away from the work area while hoses are running
  • Let us know about any known roof leaks, pest problems or recent electrical work
  • Mention any planned renovations, solar or air-conditioning work so we can plan the new insulation around it

Ceiling vacuum or insulation removal?

The two services overlap. Insulation removal focuses on taking out old batts and insulation. A ceiling vacuum goes further by cleaning the whole cavity of loose debris, dust and contamination. In practice, many Brisbane jobs combine both, and we will recommend the right scope after inspecting your roof.
