Closed-cell spray foam in Brisbane

Spray Foam Insulation Brisbane

Spray foam insulation in Brisbane seals and insulates in a single step, which makes it a strong choice for humid South East Queensland homes. Insulation Extract applies closed-cell polyurethane spray foam to subfloors, walls and roof undersides where batts struggle to perform.

Spray foam goes on as a liquid and expands within seconds into a dense, rigid foam that bonds to the surface. Because it fills every crack and gap it touches, it does more than slow heat transfer. It also blocks air leaks, which are a big source of discomfort and wasted cooling in many Brisbane homes.

What is closed-cell spray foam?

There are two main types of spray foam: open-cell and closed-cell. Open-cell foam is softer and more sponge-like. Closed-cell foam is denser and more rigid, with a higher R-value for each millimetre of thickness. Closed-cell foam achieves around R1.0 for every 20mm of thickness, so it can deliver meaningful insulation in tight spaces where thick batts will not fit.

  • Insulates and air-seals at the same time
  • Bonds directly to timber, metal and masonry surfaces
  • Does not slump or sag over time
  • Resists moisture, helping limit conditions for mould
  • Adds rigidity and can reduce noise transfer

Why spray foam suits Brisbane's climate

Humidity and condensation

Brisbane summers are hot and humid. Where warm, moist air meets a cooler surface, such as the underside of a metal roof at night or an air-conditioned room's walls, condensation can form. Closed-cell foam creates an airtight layer that limits humid air reaching those surfaces, which helps reduce condensation and the mould problems that can follow.

Heat gain through metal roofs

Corrugated iron and other metal roofs are everywhere in Brisbane, from Queenslanders to modern homes and patio extensions. Metal heats quickly in the sun. Spray foam applied to the underside of roof sheeting, where suitable, reduces radiant heat entering the space below.

Draughty timber homes

Queenslanders and older timber homes often have gaps between floorboards and around wall linings. Spray foam seals those gaps as it insulates, stopping the draughts that batts alone cannot.

Storm season

Closed-cell foam is rigid and bonds firmly, so it holds its position in roof and wall spaces and does not get blown around or dislodged the way loose material can when wind is driven into a roof during a storm.

Rain noise on tin roofs

A summer downpour on a bare metal roof can be loud enough to drown out the television. Foam bonded to the underside of the sheeting adds mass and dampens that drumming, which many owners of Queenslanders and metal-roofed extensions find a welcome side benefit during storm season.

Where we use spray foam in Brisbane homes

Underfloor

Spraying the underside of a timber floor is one of the most popular uses in Brisbane. It suits raised Queenslanders and highset homes, sealing gaps between boards and insulating in one pass. We generally need more than 600mm of clearance and good access throughout the subfloor.

Walls

During renovations, extensions or re-cladding, when wall frames are open, spray foam can be applied between studs for a high-performing, airtight wall.

Roofs and ceilings

Where batts are impractical, such as skillion sections, raked ceilings during construction or the underside of some metal roofs, spray foam can provide insulation within a slim depth.

Granny flats, studios and extensions

Converted garages, backyard studios and patio enclosures often have limited space for insulation. Spray foam can make these spaces far more comfortable through a Brisbane summer.

Spray foam or batts?

Spray foam is not always the answer. For a standard ceiling with good roof access, Knauf Earthwool® batts usually give excellent performance at better value. Earthwool® is made with up to 80% recycled glass and ECOSE® Technology, a bio-based binder with no added formaldehyde, and carries a 50-year manufacturer warranty.

Spray foam earns its place where you need air sealing, where space is limited, where the surface is irregular or where moisture control matters. Many homes use both: batts in the ceiling, foam under the floor or in tricky sections. We recommend the right mix after the free assessment.

Things to consider before spraying

Termite inspection access

Termites are common in South East Queensland. Before spraying near stumps, bearers or wall bases, we discuss keeping inspection zones accessible so your regular pest inspections can continue.

Ventilation and services

We plan around plumbing, wiring and subfloor ventilation, and keep clearances where they are needed.

During and after application

We will advise you on keeping the work area clear and how long to stay away from the space while the foam is applied and cures.

Our spray foam process

  1. 1

    Free assessment

We inspect the area, check access, surfaces, moisture and services, and confirm whether spray foam is the best choice.

  2. 2

    Preparation

Surfaces are cleaned and the surrounding area is masked and protected.

  3. 3

    Application

Trained applicators spray the foam in even passes to reach the agreed thickness.

  4. 4

    Quality check

We check coverage and thickness, trim where needed and walk you through the finished job.

Frequently Asked Questions

Closed-cell spray foam is well suited to humid conditions because it creates an airtight layer that resists moisture. This helps limit condensation on cooler surfaces and the mould problems that can follow.
