Old insulation out, clean roof space in

Insulation Removal Sydney

Insulation removal in Sydney clears out old batts, loose-fill and cellulose that have stopped doing their job, so your home can be properly re-insulated. Insulation Extract uses a powerful negative-pressure vacuum that sends the material straight into a sealed truck hopper, not through your house.

When old insulation needs to come out

A lot of Sydney homes still have the insulation that went in decades ago, or a patchwork of products added by different owners. Over time that layer stops working well. Common reasons Sydney homeowners call us include:

  • Batts that have flattened, slumped or been pushed aside by electricians, plumbers and antenna installers
  • Old cellulose or paper-based blow-in that has settled and left bare patches
  • Rat, possum or bird droppings and nesting material through the roof space
  • Insulation that has been wet from a roof leak or storm and has stayed damp
  • Heavy dust build-up, which is common under older tiled roofs near busy roads
  • Renovation, solar or rewiring work where trades need a clear roof space

Materials we commonly remove in Sydney

Sydney's heavy summer storms and east coast lows can push water through cracked tiles and blocked valleys. Wet insulation loses much of its value, can stain ceilings and may grow mould if it stays damp. If you have had a roof leak, it is worth checking whether the insulation underneath has dried out properly.

Putting new insulation over a damaged layer keeps the gaps, mess and smells in place. Removing it first gives a clean, flat surface so new batts can perform at their rated R-value.

  • Old glasswool and fibreglass batts that have broken down into dust
  • Wool insulation found in some older homes
  • Cellulose and paper-based loose-fill blow-in
  • Polystyrene beads, which spread easily and are hard to clear by hand
  • Insulation fouled by rats, possums or birds, or soaked by storm leaks

Loose-fill asbestos in NSW: check before removal

NSW has a well-known history with loose-fill asbestos insulation. Between the late 1960s and 1980s, loose amosite asbestos, sold under names such as Mr Fluffy, was blown into roof spaces of some homes in Canberra and parts of NSW. The NSW Government has investigated affected homes, and NSW Fair Trading maintains a public Loose-Fill Asbestos Insulation Register.

Most old Sydney roof spaces do not contain loose-fill asbestos, but if your home was built before 1990 it should be checked before any insulation is disturbed. Asbestos can also turn up in other building materials of that era, such as eaves lining and fibro sheeting.

How we handle it

This is not about scare tactics. It is simply the safe order of work for older homes in NSW, and it protects you, your neighbours and our crew.

  • Check the NSW Loose-Fill Asbestos Insulation Register for your address before booking
  • We inspect the existing material during the free on-site assessment
  • If anything looks suspect, work stops and we ask for testing by a licensed assessor
  • Insulation Extract is not licensed to remove asbestos, and we never vacuum it

Our Sydney insulation removal process

Removal is planned around your home's roof type and access. Many Sydney homes have terracotta or concrete tiles, which lets us work through the roof rather than through a small manhole inside the house.

Preparation

  • Power to the work area is switched off for the crew's safety around wiring
  • Stored items are cleared from the roof space before we start
  • We confirm the type of material and how much there is

Extraction

Our 25HP vacuum runs on the truck and pulls the old insulation through a hose under negative pressure, straight into a sealed hopper. Nothing is bagged and dragged through your hallway, and no dust is released inside the home from the extraction itself. Vacuuming a ceiling does stir up years of settled dust, so we recommend keeping windows closed and exhaust fans off on the day.

Clean-up and disposal

Once the old layer is out, we vacuum the ceiling surface to lift remaining dust and debris. The material is taken away for disposal at approved facilities, leaving the roof space ready for new insulation.

Replacing old insulation with Earthwool®

Most removal jobs finish with new Knauf Earthwool® ceiling batts installed by the same crew. Earthwool is made with up to 80% recycled glass and ECOSE® Technology, a bio-based binder with no added formaldehyde, and carries a 50-year manufacturer warranty. We help you choose an R-value that suits whether you live by the coast in climate zone 5 or further west in zone 6, where winters are colder.

Insulation removal across Greater Sydney

Our NSW depot is at Unit 4/1 Powdrill Rd, Prestons. From there we carry out insulation removal across the Inner West, Eastern Suburbs, North Shore, Northern Beaches, Hills District, Western Sydney, South West Sydney including Liverpool and Campbelltown, and the Sutherland Shire, as well as the Central Coast and Wollongong.

Older suburbs with Federation, interwar and post-war homes, such as Ashfield, Hurstville, Parramatta, Granville, Bankstown and Ryde, are where we see the most worn-out insulation. Terrace roofs in the inner city can be tight to work in, so access is confirmed at the assessment.
