What changes the price

Every roof is measured and inspected before we quote. These are the things that move a job up or down the range:

Roof size

Prices are per square metre of ceiling, so the area to be done is the biggest factor.

Roof pitch and access

A low-pitched roof or a small manhole means slower, more careful work in a tight space, which sits at the top of the range. A high roof with good access sits towards the bottom.

What is in the roof

Heavy droppings, nesting material, old loose-fill or several layers of old batts take longer to vacuum out than a single layer of tired batts.

The R-value you choose

Higher R-value batts are thicker and cost more to supply. We recommend an R-value for your home at the assessment.

Melbourne homes

Melbourne has many weatherboard homes, Victorian and Edwardian terraces and post-war brick veneers. Older roofs often have very little or badly settled insulation, and terraces can have tight roof spaces that take longer to work in. Melbourne's colder winters make ceiling insulation work harder here than in warmer cities.

What R-value do Melbourne homes need?

Most of Melbourne is in climate zone 6 under the National Construction Code. You can check your address on the ABCB climate zone map, linked under Sources below.

For a new home built to the NCC 2022 deemed-to-satisfy provisions in climate zone 6, the minimum ceiling insulation for a pitched roof with a flat ceiling is R3.0 to R4.0, depending on the roof colour, whether the roof space is ventilated and whether there is insulation or reflective foil under the roof (ABCB Housing Provisions, Table 13.2.3g).

Upgrading the insulation in an existing home doesn't have to meet the new-home minimums, but they are a sensible starting point. We recommend an R-value for your roof at the free assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does insulation removal cost in Melbourne?

Old insulation removal in Melbourne typically costs $15–$30 per m² of ceiling, about $1,800–$3,600 for a 120 m² ceiling. Your price is confirmed in writing after a free on-site assessment.

How much does it cost to insulate a ceiling in Melbourne?

New Knauf Earthwool® ceiling batts typically cost $15–$30 per m² installed, depending on the R-value, roof size and pitch. If the old insulation has to come out first, removal and new batts together typically cost $30–$60 per m².

What R-value ceiling insulation suits Melbourne?

Most of Melbourne is in climate zone 6, where new homes built to the NCC 2022 deemed-to-satisfy provisions need R3.0 to R4.0 ceiling insulation for a pitched roof with a flat ceiling. Existing homes don't have to meet that, but it is a sensible floor for Melbourne winters.

Is it worth replacing old insulation in a Melbourne weatherboard house?

Often, yes. Older weatherboard homes commonly have thin or settled ceiling insulation. We check what is there at the free assessment and tell you whether a top-up is enough or whether the old insulation should come out first.
